Battle Los Angeles Soundtrack Review

Battle Los Angeles Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the motion picture score Battle: Los Angeles by Brian Tyler.

"I can't find any flaws with this polished product"

Battle: Los Angeles might be this year's Skyline, or it might not. The story sounds pretty familiar: A marine platoon faces off against an alien invasion in Los Angeles. Skyline gave us at least some great music and hadn't it been for scheduling conflicts, it might have had a Brian Tyler score. Jonathan Liebesman is the director and he chooses Brian Tyler yet again after teaming up with him on The Killing Room, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and Darkness Falls. It's good to have you back Mr. Tyler!

Feels Like Forever

I was just thinking it the other day. It's been ages since I have heard something new from Brian Tyler. But it just seemed that way. In fact, last August The Exendables hit us and it was yet another action hit from Tyler whose track record is getting better and better. He has been so prolific in the last couple of years that 5 months feel like forever. I have been looking forward to this score for some time because I love action scores and Brian Tyler is one of the best.

His style is easily recognizable starting off with 'Battle Los Angeles Hymn'. The sound of the Brian Tyler guitar sets the mood as we go deeper into what could be a well deserved action treat. Tyler has been listening to John Murphy lately as some of the cues like 'Elegy' and 'The Freeway' sounds pretty much identical to the Kick-Ass theme (which sounds eerily like earlier Murphy works). Perhaps even Explosions In The Sky has gotten a nod or three in the fantastic cue 'Shelf Life'. At least Tyler knows how to use great music when needed.

I love the mix between calmer tracks and the more heavy action cues. 'Evac' is a great action track for example, but Tyler doesn't go all out like he did for "War". If this was a game, it would feel like a thinking man's shooter and the score comes fully loaded with great and powerful themes, lots of action and very thoughtful minimalistic tracks.

Conclusion

Yes, I can safely say Brian Tyler delivers again on a big scale. I think this might be his best action score to date and that says a lot. I can't find any flaws with this polished product, it just sounds great in my ears. This year's best action treat so far, and I have big hoped for Fast Five and everything else Tyler creates this year.

CUE RATING: 91.8

Thanks Jay,

It was something like this I wanted a long time ago, but didn't have the technical knowledge to back it up. Now I do, so I decided to take action.

New features are coming very soon by the way :)

Sorry off-topic, just wanted to be quick and say FANTASTIC new look to the site!

This is something James Southall over at movie-wave needs to learn a thing or two about. As it stands now, his site looks like it's stuck in 1995. UGLY.

Keep up the GREAT work! :D

@Carl Thanks Carl!

@Andres Agreed!

@Stephen You definitely need to check it out. Thanks!

@Khunathip The intensity is severely lowered compared to for example War, so I definitely appreciate that. Love his soft guitar work as well.

@Sledge Glad you like it!

@Angela P Thanks! Yep, the score definitely hits the bullseye for all intents and purposes.

@Chris Yes, all reviews will return on Soundtrack Geek. Glad to be back :)

I really love the theme, espcially how it is used in "For Home, Country and Family". The soft tracks are very good, but, as many Tyler's action tracks, other action tracks here are still too intense to be frequently listenable. However, "Battle Los Angeles Main Titles" and "Battle Los Angeles" are my favorites action tracks so far.

By the way, I'm also glad that you're back!
