Brotherhood Soundtrack Review

Brotherhood Soundtrack Review: This is a review of Brotherhood by Dan Marocco.

"This score is very dark, there isn't as much as a speck of light"

Brotherhood, pledges, pranksÉ Sounds like a bad combination and it is. To get into a college fraternity, pledge Adam Buckley has to rob a convenience store for exactly $19.10 because that's the year the fraternity was created. It goes horribly wrong for the young kid and that's just the beginning. Relatively new composer Dan Marocco gets his chance on the big screen with director Will Cannon.

This American composer grew up in Osaka, Japan and has worked with composer like Peter Nashel, Alexandre Desplat and Javier Navarrete. He has been around composing for mostly TV since early 2002.

Style

His style is somewhat unique in that he doesn't go for a big orchestral score or an electronic one. Instead he uses one of his favorite instruments, the guitar to good use, specially in the cue '$19.10' where you have to love the riffs and the melody.

It is the kind of music used in the trailer and it fits the movie very well. He continues on the good path with 'Roslyn', but let's go a little bit with 'Lights Out', 'Party's Over' and 'The Basement' where ambience and mood takes over.

This score is very dark, there isn't as much as a speck of light and I suspect the movie is the same. The track 'Good Luck' is using a guitar riff as a subtle underscore while a guitar plays on top. It can be a bit monotone at times, but it really works as a mood builder.

There's also a good theme in 'One Story'. Hardly easy to hum to, but it settles the score in a nice melancholy way.

Conclusion

Dan Marocco has a very interesting style and I would love to hear more from him. The guitar works well and specially in a dark score like this, the mood is really good. This short score is all I have heard from him, but I can definitely say that I liked what I heard so far.
