Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark by Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders.
"I feel it lacks the wow-factor, the excitement factor."
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a remake by Guillermo del Toro that is again based on a H.P. Lovecraft story called "The Rats In The Walls". It's about strange creatures living in the basement of an old house. Nothing new in other words, but this time the score is composed by Marco Beltrami & Buck Sanders.

Minus the disaster that was "Hurt Locker", Beltrami & Sanders has delivered great music previously with "Max Payne". I believe they are good for each other, and it's fun to have them work on a del Toro project together, specially a horror film.
It's a solid score, it oozes high quality from start to finish yet if fails to stand out. There are many good cues here that are both creepy and entertaining like 'Into The Basement' and 'Goblin Trouble' that adds to the overall feeling of quality this score has. I feel it lacks the wow-factor, the excitement factor. I was more excited getting this score than listening to it. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't impress me, neither does it meet my expectations.
Conclusion
There's nothing wrong with this score except the fact that it could have been a lot better if it had more cues that made me feel excited. Unfortunately it fails where it's supposed to impress and overall I feel that the score is a bit of a disappointment.
CUE RATING: 72.3
