Dylan Dog: Dead of Night Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Dylan Dog: Dead of Night by Klaus Badelt & Andrew Raiher.
"I hope Klaus Badelt returns to form soon with a bigger film than Dylan Dog"
Dylan Dog is based on a comic book about an investigator of the undead. He seeks out monsters and takes care of business when someone crosses the line. From what I've heard this film doesn't reflect the comic books at all, but a Hollywood-ized version that doesn't please the fans of the comic books. It looks funny so it's impossible to classify this as a horror film, but rather a comedy. The score is composed by Klaus Badelt & Andrew Raiher.

Klaus Badelt is back and with him is Anrew Raiher. Raiher is mostly known for his short films but has provided additional music for films such as Starship Troopers 3, Solomon Kane and Little Nicholas. In other words, he has worked with Klaus Badelt for some time, but this is his first official credit as far as I know (even though he isn't listed on IMDB as composer of Dylan Dog).
Dylan Dog Theme
Let's start with the good, like the Dylan Dog theme. I really like it, it's worthy of a great detective story and you can hear it in 'Meet Dylan' and numerous of other cues. The guitar works really well, almost like a blues song, but it's more of a pop/rock montage. The cues that uses this well are the best cues on the score, but they are the only cues to get five stars which is a shame.
There's also a funny voice featured in the tracks 'Gabriel' and 'Father's Book' that I sort of like. It sounds like a drunken old woman singing her heart out to be honest. It works in a weird way.
I classify this as a comedy score, but the music is not very comical in nature. It is definitely rooted in a more dramatic horror story. I like comedies that doesn't try to be overly funny in the score, but it has to be some good material, themes or good action in there. Luckily it does have it's fair share of good material, but it's a score of two halves. There's quite a few filler tracks on here that drags the score down a few notches like 'Wolfgnag Fight' and 'Beetle Fight'.
Conclusion
I hope Klaus Badelt returns to form soon with a bigger film than Dylan Dog. Not that this is bad score, far from it, but I do miss the bigger scores like 'The Time Machine' or 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. As for Andrew Raiher, I have no idea who scored what, but if this score is representative of his work, then he should have a very good career ahead of him. Dylan Dog is a good score but nothing more, specially when you consider that the film is trying to be a comedy.
