Fast Five Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Fast Five by Brian Tyler.
"There's no denying that Brian Tyler is right for the Fast & Furious series, but I do miss the first and the third one particularly"
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker returns as Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner. This time they fight together 100% of the time on the wrong side of the law as they try to switch lanes between a ruthless drug lord and a relentless federal agent. The federal agent is being played by Dwayne Johnson, known as The Rock in some circles. The director is Justin Lin who also directed the last couple of Fast & Furious movies. The score is as always written by Brian Tyler.

As usual you can expect lots of action in this fifth rendition of the Fast & Furious film series. Brian Tyler who did the score the all but the second one (that was scores by David Arnold), knows what this series needs.
There's not many surprises here as you go along, but there's plenty of fun to be had along the way. No themes, just hard unrelenting action cues one after the other. It's like the tracks are trying to compete against each other.
Mix
It's a mix between orchestral music and electronic music, but I found the orchestral music a bit stale, like 'Fast Five' yet I still enjoy it. What I enjoyed more is the electronic tracks which dare to be a bit more experimental while utilizing a good rhythm and melody. Tracks like 'Tapping In' and 'Surveillance Montage' are simply fantastic for an old electronica freak like me. It sounds a bit like BT when he was on top of his game.
There are some other bits as well like 'The Perfect Crew' that has a very cool vibe to it. It's no hard-paced action cue or an experimental electronic cue, but rather un ultra cool bassy theme for the crew. I also like the stuff for Hobbs, particularly 'Hobbs' and 'Hobbs Arrives'. He must be some presence, but The Rock usually is.
Conclusion
There's no denying that Brian Tyler is right for the Fast & Furious series, but I do miss the first and the third one particularly. They had a certain edge that I feel is missing here. Maybe the characters are all grown up now, and perhaps change was needed, but I have to admit to being a tad nostalgic. I'll get back to listening some more of Fast Five, then the older scores, and I have a feeling the magic is not lost.
