Insidious Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Insidious by Joseph Bishara.
"My conclusion is that this will be the scariest score that you will have heard in a while."
How long has it been since you got really scared watching a horror film? For me it's been years. I think the last time was Ju-On and that's some time ago. Insidious is a frightful experience from start to finish and the sound design and the atmosphere was excellent. I was happy when they announced the score from Joseph Bishara would be released and now it's here.

Let me be clear, this is not a pretty soundtrack. It's not designed to give you peaceful moments or lovely themes. What you will find, if you are prepared, is one of the creepiest scores out there. Bishara's sound is what makes the film extra scary and after having watched it, the score on CD works just as well to bring me back into the realm of terror.
I have to ask myself if this score would have been as effective for me if I had not seen the film first. I usually listen to the score before I go see the film so this is unusual for me. I can't really answer, but I would love to hear comments from you. I remember I saw a comment on my Facebook page about it, that it was truly a classic horror score. I think the person meant it had all the violin scratches it could take.
Cues like 'The Insidious Plane' are really scary, specially when the laughing violin sets in. That is a truly scary moment on screen as well. The most scary cues come later though in the form of 'They're Coming Through', 'Slithers Into Fog', 'Dark Boundaries Crossed' and 'Void Figure 7'. I just hate/love the way Bishara use the violin to scare me silly.
There's a couple of "nicer" tracks also like 'The Child Awakes' and 'A New World', more peaceful moments, but it is the scary tracks that make the score and it's plenty of it.
Conclusion
My conclusion is that this will be the scariest score that you will have heard in a while. It certainly scared me and it's no fun listening to this alone in the dark. Joseph Bishara has truly made a score made to scare and it boy does it work. If you are looking for a thematic melodic horror score, this is not for you, but if you are looking for a score to really scare you, then this is it. I think people who watched the film will get that extra layer of fear while listening to it.
