Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the video game score Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning by Grant Kirkhope.

"Epic-ness aside, this is a decent RPG score and certainly does the job and then some."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an action role-playing game from 38 Studios and Electronic Arts. What's interesting about this is that fantasy author R.A. Salvatore (Icewind Dale, Neverwinter) created the game universe and lore. Some big names in this interesting RPG but what about the music? The composer is Grant Kirkhope

Finally a video game score and to top it off, it's from a composer I have not heard before or so I thought. I just didn't know that British composer Grant Kirkhope created the music for GoldenEye, Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark and Viva Pinata. Time for an epic adventure and hopefully an epic score by Kirkhope. Last year there was Skyrim and The Lord Of The Rings: War in the North that sets a nice benchmark of what I think is an excellent and epic role-playing game score.

Well, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is unfortunately not the epic masterpiece I had hoped for. Most of the cues fits perfectly for the premise of the game, but they are mostly what I like to call explorer cues. You know what I mean? You walk around from place to place doing your quests and the music is just there in the background. There are cues like 'Troll' that I would love to hear more of. It has something that almost makes it a five star cue, some excitement and epic sounding build up. 'Niskaru' and 'Fight' are two more good cues that are almost great.

Conclusion

Epic-ness aside, this is a decent RPG score and certainly does the job and then some. For me, I demand more of my game scores and so I fear this one will be quickly forgotten. I just wish there were at least a couple of great cues, a better main theme perhaps or some awesome battle cues but I am left wanting. Grab it if you like listenable adventure scores that you can listen to in the background.

CUE RATING: 59.4
