Rise of the Planet of the Apes Soundtrack Review

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Rise of the Planet of the Apes by Patrick Doyle.

There's potential here for sure, but the opportunities are not taken in a direction I had hoped.

The Planet of the Apes series has provided hours of entertainment. It's always about roles being reversed. The humans are the apes and vice versa, and there is a strong moral present. They did a remake in 2001 that was decent, but this is a supposedly a full reboot of the franchise. Set in present day, San Francisco, genetic experiments on apes leads to extremely intelligent creatures and of course disaster ensues. Director is Rupert Wyatt and the composer is Patrick Doyle.

This really has been one of the better years of Patrick Doyle for some time. He has had four scores officially released and I think that's some kind of record for him. Two of the scores has been excellent, one less so, but perhaps the most anticipated score by many is this one.

What is Doyle's approach to renew this franchise? Of course all older themes has to go. This has to be fresh and new. He certainly eradicates any memory of the previous scores pre-2001, but is it enough?

I have to say it is a decent action score, some of it quite good. Doyle seemingly doesn't even try to introduce new themes, but goes with the approach of solid action scoring. Doyle certainly learned a thing or two about modern action scoring in Thor and he continues in a similar fashion

Thor for me is a much better score because there are some great emotional moments in there propelled by great themes. In this score, Doyle is too focused on the action and the drama.

Conclusion

There's potential here for sure, but the opportunities are not taken in a direction I had hoped. There's tons of possibilities for great themes and even better action scoring, but Doyle doesn't go there. It is an above average action score that could and should have been a lot better.
