Stake Land Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Stake Land by Jeff Grace.
"It's a very strong horror score that not only makes you scared, but makes you think"
When I first got into film scores in the early nineties, I didn't get horror score. I just couldn't enjoy a single note of what I heard. It was all a mix of ambience and noise put together in a way I couldn't comprehend. I've come a long way since then and discovered that the world of horror scoring is a lot of fun. It has now become one of my favorite genres, so when Moviescore Media announced they had set up a brand new division dedicated to horror scores I screamed of joy. Stake Land is the first release and the film is about a world where vampires has pretty much infested anything and everything. The fight is on. The score is composed by Jeff Grace.

Jeff Grace is certainly no stranger to horror film scoring. I've enjoyed his work on "Fear Itself" and "Joshua/The Roost" in the past and he showed what a versatile composer he is with "I Sell The Dead".
Melodically Sound
In Stake Land he takes a more melodically sound approach which I think takes it up to a higher level. I have previously spoken about my love for horror scores that dares to use good themes and melodies and this is no different.
You can hear in tracks like 'Lockdown Town', 'Nothing Out There' and 'Belle and the New Family' that this score has more than its fair share of scare. It's all very bleak, much like the world in which Stake Land finds itself. There's darkness and the score reflects that but it does it beautifully with good melodies and a powerful string instrument.
Conclusion
There is not much to criticize here. It's a very strong horror score that not only makes you scared, but makes you think. It is a thinking man's horror score and Jeff deals with it in a very good way. As a debut score on the Screamworks label, it fits the bill perfectly and I am looking forward to the next scores to be released.
