The Land That Time Forgot: The Fantasy Film Music of Chris Ridenhour Soundtrack Review: This is a review of The Fantasy Film Music of Chris Ridenhour by Chris Ridenhour.

"Maybe this review comes across as a bit too harsh, but by all means, this is a really good compilation of Ridenhour's finest fantasy scores"

This is the second score as a part of a trilogy where the scores of Chris Ridenhour is featured. This one contains four suites from the fantasy films "The 7 Adventures of Sinbad", "Merlin and the War of the Dragons", "Dragonquest" and "The Land That Time Forgot" plus one bonus trailer track from "War of the Dragons". 5. Trailer Music from Merlin and the War of the Dragons****

The 7 Adventures of Sinbad (2010)

They call it Sinbad, the original Prince of Persia in the marketing department. I'm not so sure, but here is the score to the 2010 movie featuring Sinbad and his adventures. The 21 minutes long suit is more than entertaining, certainly more so than Harry Gregson-Williams Prince of Persia last year. I love the beginning with a lot of choirs and mayhem. The percussion based sequence from 2:24 fits right into this powerhouse of a score. It keeps you entertained all the way to the end and as an adventure score, this is top notch.

Merlin and the War of the Dragons (2010)

Chris Ridenhour has said that this is his favorite score because he put so much effort into it. I hope he doesn't hate me for saying that it's not my favorite, although it is quite a good score. Not a fan of the beginning. Choirs are good but this feels a bit forced, but the theme from 1:25 has a lot of potential. Unfortunately the theme is not featured much and in the melody department it's quite dry. It's more a suspense score, but I wanted more.

Dragonquest (2009)

In this 17 minute suite from the movie Dragonquest we start with a slow mood builder with a rhythmic percussion track and subtle choir, then goes to a ghostly track with female vocals. It has a nice heroic theme that you can hear from 4:25 and later at a more slow pace. I feel it lacks that little extra to put it in the 5 star category, but it's close.

The Land That Time Forgot (2009)

This almost 17 minute suite never gets going. Sure there are some good action sequences here but it all feels a bit flat to me. It's a fine mix between action and more quiet tracks but in the end, it's the least impressive score on this compilation.

Finally there is a short 1 minute and 16 seconds track and it's the 'Trailer Music for Merlin and the War of the Dragons'. It actually feels like it's part of the original score so no surprises here. Like the suite, it feels a bit forced, but it's another good track on this compilation.

Conclusion

Maybe this review comes across as a bit too harsh, but by all means, this is a really good compilation of Ridenhour's finest fantasy scores. Like I have mentioned In some of the individual suite reviews, I wanted more themes, more excitement and entertainment. I want the music to flow a bit more, but perhaps we can't blame the music, but the way the suites were put together. All in all, I highly recommend this for all fantasy score fans.
