The Great Miracle - El Gran Milagro Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score The Great Miracle - El Gran Milagro by Mark McKenzie.
"A stellar effort by McKenzie who continues to impress"
The Great Miracle is a an animated feature film in 3D about hope, love and redemption set in a Catholic setting. I haven't heard of this film before and I have trouble finding information about it, but I have heard a lot about the score. A couple of my colleagues has already reviewed it and they liked it a lot. Someone on Twitter mentioned to me that it wasn't in my Best Score of 2011: Critic's Choice list as of yet. I replied that it's because I can't find 3 reviews of it yet which is the rule so I decided to write one myself. The score is by Mark McKenzie.

Let me just say it's wonderful to have Mark McKenzie back. He is one of those composers who almost always without fail seems to over deliver. Will it ring true for The Great Miracle?
Choral
I wasn't too impressed with the first four tracks. I liked them but they didn't stand out to me. They are very easy to listen to but is what I characterize as good background music. However from the excellent and choral 'Benedictus Deus' it just goes on to be something very special altogether.
My two favorite tracks are 'I Miss You' that is as tender as a love song has ever been and 'Ultimate Love' which has a majestic choral section, not in brass, but in it's delightful subtlety. With the extra luxury of having a great theme those found their way to my heart instantly.
'Go In Peace' is another tearjerker if you ask me. A speculative, but wonderful emotional effort by McKenzie that gets me every time. It is also includes a wonderful buildup.
Conclusion
A stellar effort by McKenzie who continues to impress, but why do I still feel a bit cold after listening to it? I guess it is too calm, to laidback an effort. There's perhaps too few high points, although 'Go In Peace' has a great buildup as well as 'Ascension / Gloria Patri'. It's like a film where everything goes well without a problem. Not much fun in that! That's pretty much the only criticism I have for this score. It isn't much, but it was enough to not get a top score.
