The Grey Soundtrack Review

The Grey Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score The Grey by Marc Streitenfeld.

"This score bothers me more than it should, and not in a good way."

The Grey starring Liam Neeson and Dermot Mulroney is directed by Joe Carnahan. A plane with an oil drilling team is crashing in the wilderness of Alaska. Now a big struggle for survival begins as they fight against nature and beasts. Joe Carnahan's films usually is a bit off-beat when it comes to music. This time he has chosen Marc Streitenfeld as the composer.

This film fascinates me and I look forward to watch it when it is released. The music by Marc Streitenfeld could have excited me too, but it doesn't. I have a love/hate relationship with the guy as he can creates very bad scores and great scores from one movie to the next. This one unfortunately has Streitenfeld back where I don't want him. He did some great stuff for Robin Hood and I expect him to come up with a great score for Prometheus so I will just write this off as a slight mistake.

What bothers me the most is how bored I get listening to this score. Cues like 'Writing The Letter', 'Eyes Glowing' and 'The Morning After' really just want me to kill my headphones. This is not what I want to hear. Instead I want to hear cues like 'Suicide' and 'Alpha' that has a very good buildup and a looming theme that's almost crawl it's way to the top.

Conclusion

This score bothers me more than it should, and not in a good way. After Robin Hood I had hoped for something more thematic, something exciting to fit the trailer I just saw of the film. It lacks most of that and doesn't deliver in a way I expected it. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but i'm confident that even with mediocre expectations, this score wouldn't impress me much.

CUE RATING: 47.5
