Fact: It's been far too long since we heard something of importance from composer Robert Folk. As far as I am concerned he is a bit of a legend. Who can forget the score he created for Police Academy and The Neverending Story? He is still composing for film and TV and finally someone saw fit to release one of his scores. It is for the film There Be Dragons - Secretos De Pasion, a Spanish epic war film set during the Spanish Civil War. I don't know what it is about dragons in the title of scores or tracks themselves but they appear to bring the best out of composers and Robert Folk is no exception.
What we have here is really an epic score, full of adventure and fun. The Spanish feel of this score is also unmistakable and is a great touch to an already good score. From the 'Main Titles' to 'An Epic Story' we are told an impressive tale of bravery and drama as it unfolds. There are quite a few standout tracks here as well such as 'Love & War Finale' with lots of choir and great orchestral music. 'Oriol Is Dead' is another track to mention along with 'At First Sight', 'Sitting Ducks' and 'An Epic Story'.
Conclusion
Welcome back Mr. Folk! Your return couldn't have been much better. Let's just hope that you won't fade away again. There Be Dragons is a recipe for success from start to finish. If I was to criticize something it would be the sound quality, but that's hardly Robert Folk's fault. I love this score, but picky as I am, I want more 5-star cues!
