Craig Richey received his musical training as a classical pianist at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the St. Lous Conservatory of Music and Juilliard School. He has compowed music for films such as Gardens of the Night, Friends With Money, The September Issue and A Marine Story.
This score naturaly contains a lot of piano music, it's very subtle, minimalistic and more happy than sad. There's a fine line between happiness and sadness, but there's almost no distinction in this score. It just goes on and on, but doesn't have a standout track, nor a bad one. This score really is Even Steven, consistent but quite enjoyable.
Scores like this are musical wallpaper, but the term sounds terrible, just saying it like it is. However, the score is very pleasant to listen to and depends on whether you want to be emotionally moved or just want something easy and nice to listen to. I was in the mood for the latter and it delivers.
Conclusion
I think this score is perfect for the film in every way. It doesn't require an over the top orchestral effort, but exactly this. It doesn't make you think like the movie, but it does help tell a great story and film music is made for that purpose. I can't give this music a top score or a terrible one, but as I find it quite enjoyable, specially the 'Khadi' tracks I think it arises above a lot of mediocre scores.
