How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

In 1998 came arguably Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay’s finest 2 hours. Armageddon starring Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi, Will Patton, Owen Wilson and Liv Tyler was pure eye candy and ear candy for the soul. After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas is going to impact Earth in less than a month, N.A.S.A. recruits a misfit team of deep core drillers to save the planet. Armageddon is composed by Trevor Rabin and this review is part of Composer Of The Month. Harry Gregson-Williams, Hans Zimmer, Don Harper, Steve Jablonsky and John Van Tongeren also provided additional music. The CD that was released only contains the score by Trevor Rabin according to Hans-Zimmer.com. Yes, this was a sweet movie because it had a lot of heart, humor, action and it evoked deep emotions because of the way the story played out. Also who can forget the crazy Russian cosmonaut played by Peter Stormare.

The CD opens with ‘Armageddon Suite’ which contains the important and excellent Armageddon theme but also includes some wonderful guitar that sounds terrific. The main theme is very important, but there are other smaller themes that makes an appearance and it’s great. ‘AJ’s Return’ contains a couple of sweet themes. The score is very much like the movie. It’s overloading you with heroics and if you enjoy that, the you will love this score. The score sounds exactly what a 90s Jerry Bruckheimer production sounds like and that’s a sound I love very much. That theme though. ‘Leaving’ is a heart-breaking rendition with some synth strings. Of course the big cue here is ‘Launch’. I wonder if it’s that scene where they show video from all over the world and the main theme plays. I think there’s no better cue for hope than ‘Launch’. The music is so heroic and hopeful. A new dawn for the people of earth. We fight back to eliminate the threat to our existence.

This is a score to be proud of and you will literally be proud when you listen to the score. If you can’t get into a patriotic or heroic mood, then this score will have you covered. It relies heavily on it’s main theme but it’s one of the best themes out there. Listening to this gives you a small hope for humanity!
