Assassins Creed 3 Soundtrack

Assassin’s Creed 3 Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the video game score Assassin’s Creed 3 by Lorne Balfe.

“Assassin’s Creed 3 has the best music of the series thus far and all thanks to Lorne Balfe.”

Assassin’s Creed is without a doubt one of the biggest franchises in gaming today. Assassin’s Creed III is the fifth game in the main series of games and twelve in total. The games are set in various periods in history and this is set between 1753 and 1783 (mostly) as the war between the assassins and the Knight Templars continue. This used to be Jesper Kyd’s baby, but it seems that Lorne Balfe has taken over as main composer of the series.

There have been numerous Assassin’s Creed games and it wasn’t until Revelations that composer Jesper Kyd got help from Lorne Balfe to create a massive 3 CD score. I have nothing against Jesper Kyd and I thought he did a great job with the series, but Lorne Balfe brought something new, something different to the franchise and that was something I really liked. It was perhaps a bit of epic-ness. Balfe’s melodies were really solid so in Assassin’s Creed 3 he got full control and I am happy to say that it has been a success.

Just listen to ‘Assassin’s Creed III Main Theme’ and you’ll immediately hear what most of the score is like. There is a sense of epic-ness that has been lacking from earlier games in the series. The way he can just use an instrument and let it linger just enough before he changes tone really has a great effect on various cues. Something he picked up from Hans Zimmer perhaps?

Conclusion

Assassin’s Creed 3 has the best music of the series thus far and all thanks to Lorne Balfe. He really is great at putting really good themes together and he can do wonderful action cues as well. There isn’t a single misplaced cue here and the 60+ minutes of music is exactly what I want to hear from this great video game series.

I am still waiting for a full game rip cause there is loads of good music missing from the score.

Don’t forget to check out the extra track on Lorne his website. It is called ‘Connor’s Story’ and it’s amazing.

The time is coming when video game music is becoming better then film music. The new Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 is great too.

I always want the complete score. My review of Black Ops 2 coming soon.

Two great score reviews in quick succession. Fantastic stuff! Hope it continues.

Last few months have been pretty crap on the site :) . It’s back on track now and more big reviews will be coming between now and the rest of the year.

While I really liked this score, I’d still have to go with ACR as my favorite. I feel it has a better fusion of more action-type tracks like “the pursuit” and “on the run” from the third cd against the soft melodies from the “assassin’s creed theme”. Great review!

True, it’s a fine mix on ACR, but I felt the score was too long to achieve consistent quality like this one. It’s much harder to do with 3 CD’s than 1 of course.

Your churning out some good stuff now, its great to have you back. Looking forward to playing and listening to both this and Halo 4.

Thanks! Hopefully you will like what’s coming in the next few weeks and months as well.

It’s a nice soundtrack, but I don’t really think it fits well with the Assassin’s Creed universe, honestly. What I loved about Kyd was that he always brought something different and new to each soundtrack. Balfe’s soundtrack sounds like a mashup of a Jablonsky, Zimmer, and Powell soundtrack. It’s got a nice theme (which I get tired of quickly, since he uses it in every other track), and some nice action music, but it feels rather bland overall. Maybe I’m just missing Kyd…

I felt that this franchise could do with a bit of change. Kyd’s contributions has been good, but it started to feel a bit stale to me. That’s why I enjoyed this one better than all the other AC scores. Give Balfe a chance. I’m sure he will keep evolving along with the AC series. Easy to forget he is just 36 and I think his talent speaks for itself. Sure he has picked up some Zimmer-ism, but I wouldn’t call him a clone. He does well on his own and I think he is taking what Zimmer taught him and creates something different with it.

Personally I prefer the soundtrack in Assassin’s Creed 2 and its series. I find the soundtrack there to be more immersive, memorable, and excitable. Whereas AC3′s feel too solemn, soft, and sometimes just not even playing at all (or too soft to hear).

It’s not an attack on Lorne Balfe though. I enjoyed the tracks that he composed for AC:Revelation’s multiplayer sequences. I also found Jesper Kyd’s soundtrack for AC 1 lacking as well.

Yeah I think there are two camps here. One firmly inside Kyd’s camp and the other in Balfe’s. Most people prefer Kyd’s scores, but I disagree with that. Will be interesting to see what they do for the next game.

I got dissapointed with this one at first, thought it’d have more native american style music.
Then I played the game, and there’s so many great tracks that never made it here at all. Loved them all!

    • http://soundtrackgeek.com/ Jørn Tillnes

Yep, I think Balfe nailed it.

To me, I personally like both. Kyd’s “Ezio’s Family” &”City of Rome” and Balfe’s “AC: Revelations Main Theme” are flawless. That said, the rest of their music are just Zimmerish throwaway tracks to me.

I might also add that both work great in the games as well.
