How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Brian Tyler has had a wonderful year for both film and game scoring and it didn’t come as a surprise to me when I learned about his involvement with the latest score in the Assassin’s Creed franchise called Black Flag. In previous years, these scores were a one-man show with Jesper Kyd, but then Lorne Balfe slowly took over and now they’re changing things again and Brian Tyler is certainly the biggest name to be tied to this franchise so far.

How does it sound? Well it’s pirate-y and lots of fun as you would expect from a Tyler score these days. The opening cue ‘Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag Main Title’ is just the sort of main title this game needs and it’s very much a modern take on the high seas high jinx of the classic pirate era.

I am very satisfied with the score Tyler has delivered. It is fun, albeit not very original. It’s not a score you’ll enjoy if you are into old classic pirate scores, but if you are into modern action scores, then you’ll enjoy this one that has a pirate twist to it. It won’t be a classic for the ages, but it delivers a good enough score for it to be one of the better game scores of 2013.
