Beasts of the Southern wild is a fantasy/drama movie from director Benh Zeitlin who also wrote parts of the score. Faced with both her hot-tempered father’s fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love. The score is composed by Dan Romer & Benh Zeitlin.

Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin has created a minimalistic score based on simple themes and you know what, it works for me. The themes in ‘I Think I Broke Something’ and ‘The Thing That Made You’ are great, very simplistic, but it stirs emotion which is what I want it to do. The rest of the very short score is easy on the ears and certain cues can have large pauses of nothingness like ‘End Of The World’, which may sound weird, but it makes perfect sense to me.

It’s not a score to provoke some complex feelings, but rather the simplistic side of you, the most pure if you will. If scores like these are without some great themes and catchy tunes, it will be dead in the water, but Beasts Of The Southern Wild gets it just right.

Conclusion

Sometimes I just want to listen to music and not be overwhelmed with instruments and complex orchestrations. Beasts Of The Southern Wild is exactly that kind of score and sometimes, less really is more.
