How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

First, I have to come clean. I was really hoping that James Horner had scored Ender’s Game and he was attached for a while until his replacement Steve Jablonsky came in. I can only imagine that the classic Hollywood sound of James Horner is no longer deemed good enough for the modern sci-fi film which is a real shame. So we’re stuck with chopping block Jablonsky who always gets criticised these days, probably because he hasn’t changed much of his style since Transformers. Personally I think that style still works, but he has changed his tune slightly for Ender’s Game.

The opening cue ‘Ender’s War’ is a mix of “typical” Jablonsky action scoring and a softer side of him with a warm violin to contrast the action. You have cues like ‘The Battle Room’ which is more like his Transformer days, a more melodic and choral cue at it’s core and the violin he brings in is really adding warmth and emotion to the piece. ‘Dragons Win’ is another exciting action cue by Jablonsky as he finally goes into his most revered style, the no-holding-back action scoring style, even more so in the 6 minute long ‘Final Test’. ‘Ender’s Promise’ is a gorgeous and epic track that reminds me a bit of something trailer studio Two Steps From Hell or Audiomachine could have on their albums. That cue should definitively be used in trailers. Great theme too!

It turns out Ender’s Game is not bad, not bad at all. I am still miffed about missing out on some Horner sci-fi, but I have to admit I have had much fun with this score. At it’s best, it’s extremely entertaining.
