How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Finding Neverland from 2004 is the story of author J.M. Barrie’s friendship with a family who inspired him to create Peter Pan. Directed by Marc Forster and starring big names such as Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet it was obviously in contention for a lot of wins at the award shows yet it only won 1 Oscar and that was for Best Score by Jan A.P. Kaczmarek. This review is part of Polish Film Music Composers month.

The story of the drama and the imagination behind one of the best stories ever made is fascinating. Kaczmarek has created an imaginary world with is music which is both creative and full of fantasy. The opening theme in ‘Where Is Mr. Barrie?’ is great particularly near the end with the choir, but it’s still not what’s best about this score.

The most amazing thing about this score is clearly Kaczmarek’s piano cues. He is a genius on the piano and it shows. ‘Neverland – Piano Variation In Blue’ has so much emotion in every tangent press, it’s hard to listen to it all in one sitting. Every note is perfect, the hit of the keys, the weight, the sound. It is all in Kaczmarek’s hands and his repertoire is just beyond belief at times.

This is what great imagination sounds like and it’s a great score from start to finish.
