How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Gifted is a 2017 American comedy drama film directed by Marc Webb and starring Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace & Lindsay Duncan. Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother, Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. The score is composed by Rob Simonsen.

Well this seems like a wonderful little story about choices, growing up and fatherhood. Adding Rob Simonsen to that mix can be very potent indeed and I’m hoping that the score will be as emotional as this movie could potentially be. The score opens with an instrumental track by Timothy Seth Avett called ‘School – Early Morning’ which is lovely piece of simple Americana. Piano and guitar, very quaint but I’m thinking it’s not far from what I would expect the main score to sound like. Simonsen’s score opens with the theme of our main character, a gifted child who’se name is Mary. It’s simply called ‘Mary’s Theme’ and it’s a little bit mysterious, but mostly it’s a sweet theme, child like in nature and yet there’s a lot to hear and discover thanks to Simonsen’s use of ambience. It almost feels like a wind, but there’s so much more than that.

It is a soulful and exciting experience listening to this score. Is it me or do I have a feeling of wind blowing while I listen to the score? The music is ever flowing and it’s doing so in the right direction mixing sometimes mysterious minimalism with a little bit of dramatic music. I had expected something like this, and I am falling in love with this score. It feels so incredibly nice to listen to. Sometimes, I forget to listen to the music and just dream away because it’s so nice. Because it’s so minimalistic and laid back, most people will not notice this score, but I bet it’s really nice in context even though it’s not right in your face. It’s a lovely score that you can put on to mend your every day troubles and sometimes that’s exactly what you need. So please, give this score some attention and check it out. You won’t regret it.
