A Good Day To Die Hard Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score A Good Day To Die Hard by Marco Beltrami.
I’ve never really enjoyed Michael Kamen’s trilogy of Die Hard scores or Beltrami’s score for the fourth film, so it is with dampened expectations I listened to this one. I wasn’t expecting much except that it might be a bit tedious and boring. The first few cues proved me right, but then something happens with ‘Court Adjourned’ and particularly ‘Truckzilla (Act 1)’ that blows me away with some of the most thrilling and fun action music that Beltrami has scored in years. This is what I’m talking about!
It’s funny that I thought of Judge Dredd at the beginning of ‘Court Adjourned’ because it really is a throwback to the school of 90s high octane action. There’s even a hint of Jerry Goldsmith in there with a resemblance of his trademark synth work, but mostly it’s an orchestral masterpiece. ‘Truckzilla (Act 1)’ takes it up a notch even with some phenomenal stuff. The percussion and pacing alone is worth the admission price alone.
Sure there are cues to sleep to in this score as well as the other Die Hard scores like ‘Everyone to the Courthouse’ and ‘Scumbags’, but mostly it’s not bad at all. One of the better cues is ‘It’s Hard to Kill a McClane’ which is one of the very few melodic centerpieces, but this one is different and has a very beautiful theme on it’s own. Like ‘Father & Son’ it plays on the relationship with John and Jack McClane and it does it with inspiration and bravure.
‘Triple Vodka Rhapsody’ feels like it’s been thrown into the mix at the end, but it’s a fun cue! It’s supposed to be inspired by Russia, but the guitar reminded me of Mexican music somehow, although the melody can go both ways. It’s very zany and different, just plain fun. ‘McClane’s Brain’ also deserves a mention because it’s just completely “out there” with some extremely weird and fun instruments and sounds.
I can honestly say that I had fun listening to this score and without a shadow of a doubt, it’s the best Die Hard listening experience I have ever had. Beltrami is really at the top of his game with some of the action cues on this score while he also shows that he can mix in a couple of inspirational themes for the McClane family.
