How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Halo Wars 2 is a 2017 real-time strategy (RTS) video game developed by 343 Industries and Creative Assembly, and published by Microsoft Studios. The game is set in the science fiction universe of the Halo series in the year 2559, and is a sequel to the 2009 video game Halo Wars. The game sees the return of the human crew aboard the UNSC warship Spirit of Fire and introduces a new alien faction known as the Banished. Development of Halo Wars 2 began in 2014 and the game was announced at Gamescom in 2015. It was released on February 21, 2017 for Windows personal computers (PCs) and the Xbox One video game console. The score is composed by Gordy Haab, Brian Lee White & Brian Trifon.

The score opens with ‘Recommissioned’, a different kind of Halo music, well at least if you take the main series as a measuring point and not include the Neil Davidge score. It’s heroic, bold and action-filled and very exciting. Haab, Trifon & White has chosen to use the big sound and addinf choir to the mix. It all sounds very promising and quite epic. I know that the Halo series with scores from Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori has a lot of fans, but personally, my favorite Halo scores has been from Neil Davidge and Kazuma Jinnouchi whose style was radically different. This is more leaning towards them than O’Donnell and Salvatori, and I love that.

The music is sounding great as well with big and varied orchestral music that has everything required to make me all excited. The percussion is excellent and the music feels flowing and organic. In fact, the music reminds me a little of Don Davis’ The Matrix and that’s high praise because I love that score. This doesn’t last however. Admittedly the first CD is brilliant, the second CD is far from it, apart from a few cues. It’s like the second CD is only for the actual game play with exploration and the first CD is the flashy stuff with videos and battle. Maybe this should have been a 1 CD release only because I recommend you listen to CD 1 and skip most of CD 2. Still, there’s a lot of great music on this score, more than enough to be a worthwhile purchase. At it’s best, it’s truly fantastic so check it out.
