How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Me Before You is a 2016 American-British romantic drama film directed by Thea Sharrock and starring Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin & Janet McTeer. It is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes. Young and quirky Louisa “Lou” Clark (Emilia Clarke) moves from one job to the next to help her family make ends meet. Her cheerful attitude is put to the test when she becomes a caregiver for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a wealthy young banker left paralyzed from an accident two years earlier. Will’s cynical outlook starts to change when Louisa shows him that life is worth living. As their bond deepens, their lives and hearts change in ways neither one could have imagined. The score is composed by Craig Armstrong.

I was happy a month or so ago when I saw that this film would get a soundtrack release. “Score by Craig Armstrong” it said. Turns out it was just the soundtrack with almost no score (if at all). Suddenly the actual score appears and I couldn’t be happier. Armstrong isn’t exactly the busiest film composer around but when he has something, it’s usually worth pursuing. The score opens with the title cue ‘Me Before You’ and it’s a beautiful theme, a theme that makes me very happy. I am smiling as I listen to it and it’s 7+ minutes long. Does the joyous feeling that I have last for all those minutes? In fact it does. I love this theme. Top marks all around! I love the way the cue builds up as well around the middle. ‘Will Goes To Work’ is very different. This is a more early 2000 indie pop/rock style kind of cue, very short, but very good. ‘The Castle’ is a minimalistic and nice guitar theme. It’s all very modern and pop inspired, but I love that. It works well for romantic dramas.

Now make sure you have taken your anti-sweet pill because this score is a bucketload of sweetness and I’m not sure your health can take it. If this is your thing I can’t think of any reason why you won’t love it. The score screams out care, or maybe whisper, I don’t know. But it does so with it’s heart front and foremost and I don’t think that’s ever wrong when it comes to film, tv or video game music. When the emotions are so thick you can practically feel it, it’s a winner in my book and this is such a score. It’s what it is and surprise surprise, Craig Armstrong impresses me yet again.
