Men In Black 3 Soundtrack Review: This is a review if the film score Men In Black 3 by Danny Elfman.

“As far as I am concerned, Men In Black 3 is the best one yet with a lot more antics and fun.”

Get ready for the third installment in the Men In Black series, helmed by director Barry Sonnenfeld once again. Agent J and K is back for a third adventure and it’s about time! Agent K played by Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin seizes to exist and Agent J played by Will Smith has to go back in time to find answers. The score is yet again composed by Danny Elfman.

Let me get it out there right away. I was never a big fan of the scores to Men In Black and Men In Black 2, although there was a significant improvement in the sequel. The first Men In Black had a kickass main title theme though which has gotten worse with each sequel. ‘Men In Black 3 (Main Titles)’ is taking it in a different direction with lots of guitar but without losing the main theme altogether. Not a bad effort, but I prefer the one in the first and the second film.

I can happily say that Men In Black has matured quite a bit in the music department and this score feels and plays much better than number one and two. ‘The Set-Up’ for example is a dark and adventurous manic track that constantly changes and shifts, but never lets go of the great momentum it creates from the start. ‘Time Jump’ is a frenetic action track that has you gasping for air. ‘Griffin Steps Up’ is a beautiful theme with a heavenly choir. ‘The Mission Begins’ is my favorite track with a powerful beginning with choir and heavy percussion as it quickly switched to the humming of the main theme and it goes on from there to impress me even further. This is Danny Elfman at his best. ‘A Close One’ is another winner with a beautiful and calm start and ends up with a massive choir and the main theme on guitar.

Conclusion

As far as I am concerned, Men In Black 3 is the best one yet with a lot more antics and fun. It feels like the score has grown up and this is what we deserve from Men In Black and Danny Elfman. Some might not like the guitarwork while others prefer then previous scores, but I definitely enjoyed this.

I was almost the complete opposite – I found the MIB 2 soundtrack to be quite a let down after MIB, but this one certainly readdresses the balance. Some great Elfman cues with a lot of energy. This and Real Steel have reinvigorated my love of Elfman, especially after the rather disappointing Dark Shadows.

You didn’t like Dark shadows? I thought it was great. Looking forward to his future projects, Frankenweenie perhaps?

I loved the opening, and then felt the rest just recycled other scores (particularly The Wolfman). Frankenweenie has the potential to be amazing. I’m hoping for shades of PeeWee in amongst some OTT hammer-horror stylings :)

Few tracks for the last elfman works (MIB and Dark Shadows) sound unique. A lot sounds the same with some variations

Juuuuuust started listening to this. And after the first couple of tracks I just had to play the ORIGINAL main titles. Can’t beat ‘em.

Definitely! There’s something about “Main Titles” that immediately gets my attention.
