P.S. I Love You is a 2007 romantic drama directed by Richard LaGravanese and starring Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Harry Connick Jr. Holly Kennedy is beautiful, smart and married to the love of her life – a passionate, funny, and impetuous Irishman named Gerry. So when Gerry’s life is taken by an illness, it takes the life out of Holly. The only one who can help her is the person who is no longer there. Nobody knows Holly better than Gerry. So it’s a good thing he planned ahead. Before he died, Gerry wrote Holly a series of letters that will guide her, not only through her grief, but in rediscovering herself. The first message arrives on Holly’s 30th birthday in the form of a cake, and to her utter shock, a tape recording from Gerry, who proceeds to tell her to get out and “celebrate herself”. In the weeks and months that follow, more letters from Gerry are delivered in surprising ways, each sending her on a new adventure and each signing off in the same way; P.S. I Love You. Holly’s mother and best friends begin to worry that Gerry’s letters are keeping Holly tied to the past The score is composed by John Powell and this review is part of Composer Of The Month.

Powell has done a few romantic comedies, but none as sweet as this. I remember I enjoyed this score in 2007 and listening to it now I still do. Powell has created a sweet romantic theme for this score which you hear in cues like ‘Make Up Kisses’ and ‘The Urn’. There’s also many secondary themes that are lovely such as in ‘The Cake’ where there is a moment of genius from Powell. The comedic motif in ‘Puke / 1st Letter’ is endearing. It’s not silly enough to put me off, but it’s a sort of jolly theme I find it easy to smile to. It’s a very upbeat score. Even cues like ‘Holly Gets Fired’ is jolly and happy, lots of light guitar play. This gives me such a nice summer feeling for some reason.

I really enjoy this score. It always brings me in a good mood no matter what my starting point is. It’s not a challenging score by any means, it’s an easy to listen to romantic drama score and that’s it. Oh, and it’s a got a couple of great themes too.
