In 2006, Gore Verbinski returned with the second movie of the Pirates Of The Caribbean series called Dead Man’s Chest. This time Jack Sparrow races to recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid enslaving his soul to Jones’ service, as other friends and foes seek the heart for their own agenda as well. On board is composer Hans Zimmer and this review is part of Composer Of The Month. ‘Jack Sparrow’ is the first cue and is perfect for Johnny Depp’s character. The quirky beginning and then giving us a few of the Pirates themes for good measure. I just love the part from 4:14 and onward. There’s a rising violin sequence and then it bursts into glorious Zimmer pirates music. Fantastic!

The second cue is the one everyone loves. ‘The Kraken’ is a bombastic war cue portraying a terrible monster from the sea out to get Jack and everyone involved. It’s glorious Zimmer at his best. It’s rock opera! Dead Man’s Chest has more variety than Curse Of The Black Pearl. ‘Dinner Is Served’ has a crazy carnival waltz and ‘Two Hornpipes (Tortuga)’ is a jolly pirate tune, like you expect to hear in a pirate bar. The fun is not complete with the over-the-top ‘Wheel Of Fortune’ and it’s fantastic antics from Jack Sparrow to the Pirates theme and added extras. Then there is ‘Hello Beastie’ a 10 minute monster of a cue which is gorgeous as the title suggests. The only “problem” is that you’ve already heard some of it 2 years earlier in King Arthur, but hey, it’s a new version and it’s bloody great.

This score is bundles of fun and Krakens!
