How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Rememory is a 2017 American science fiction drama film directed by Mark Palansky and starring Peter Dinklage, Matt Ellis & Jordana Largy. Following the mysterious death of a scientific pioneer who creates technology that allows you to extract memories and watch them on an external device, Sam Bloom sets about trying to solve the murder using this memory machine. As the investigation continues, a web of intrigue and deceit is uncovered. The score is composed by Gregory Tripi.

Memories can be used in many different ways. Imagine having the technology to play back any memory in your head like it’s a home movie. I can see many ethical dilemmas unfolding. Would you want to? If the technology existed I’d probably give it a go just out of curiosity. For me some of my best memories comes from an era of glam and synths and so Tripi is giving me a trip through memory lane with some of his music here. ‘Memory Is The Ultimate Definer’ has a very warm retro synth pad going and that’s certainly more than just a memory for me. I lived it and it’s like a time machine taking me back to the 80s. It’s beautiful sweeping music with a bit of orchestral flair thrown in for good measure.

Memory is so individual that I can imagine several ways to score this movie. When the memories are being played, there’s a fast paced electronic motif playing. You can hear it in ‘The Truth Of Their Lives’. It’s quite simple, but very beautiful I think. Of course, I could easily see this sequence being played out with some emotional heartfelt orchestral music but I think it works well in context and on album. What happens when the memory extractor machine makes people angry? ‘You Fucked Up My Head’ is Tripi’s musical answer to that. It’s pretty similar to the lighter music on this score, but put in a much darker place with the light synth being replaced with a bass synth and a darker synth pad underneath. It still works great.

It doesn’t always work for me, but the score is never dull. It’s rather interesting throughout, but nothing quite beats the first 5 or 6 cues. That hit the good spot. The latter parts of this score is still interesting, but emotionally they don’t come near the strong opening of the score. It’s a very impressive score nonetheless, and it’s even better in context than on album. One to definitely check out when you have a chance.
