How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

Resident Evil The Final Chapter is a 2016 American horro film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Ruby Rose, Milla Jovovich & Ali Larter. It is based upon the video game series of the same name by Capcom. This is the sixth film in the series. The T-virus unleashed by the evil Umbrella corporation has spread to every corner of the globe, turning Earth into a hellscape of zombies, demons and monsters. Now, Alice, a former Umbrella employee turned rogue warrior, joins her friends on a last-chance mission to save mankind by storming the company’s headquarters located deep underneath what used to be Raccoon City. But the Red Queen knows Alice is coming, and the final battle will determine if the rest of mankind lives or dies. The score is composed by Paul Haslinger.

I’ve enjoyed both the games and the film series. Anderson and Jovovich returns one more to finish the franchise. They say it’s the final chapter, but then again they said the same for Jason Vorhees. The franchise has had a few composers staring with Marco Beltrami, then Jeff Danna did a couple, then Charlie Clouser and a couple from Tomandandy and finally Paul Haslinger is the one to end it all. Even though I’ve enjoyed the music, I can’t honestly say I remember any themes or music from the various scores, but I’ll have to revisit them soon. The score opens with ‘This Is My Story’ and beware of the early voice overs, but don’t worry, it’s only a short intro by Alice (very short). The music itself is pretty heroic and contains a nice theme, like an ending theme. She does say it’s the end of the story so it all fits.

With this franchise, you have to expect rough music, the kind that’s hard, heavy and a little bit broken, but it’s a good thing. Check out ‘Force Of Evil’ and you’ll have a very cool and rough intro to your next bloody mission. ‘Return To The Hive’ feels like it could be part of Daft Punk’s Tron universe. It has similar sound and feel to it. I happen to love that Tron score, so naturally I enjoy this. Without remembering every score in this franchise in detail, I’m 99% sure this score fits it perfectly, at least the later ones by Clouser and Tomandandy. Maybe the first ones were different, but that’s not how the franchise is supposed to sound now. Haslinger has pretty much nailed it with his dark, gritty and aggressive style. This is a fun, energetic score. check it out.
