How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

She is a 2001 fantasy film directed by Timothy Bond and starring Ian Duncan, Ophélie Winter & Marie Bäumer. Leo Vincey receives a map from his late father, leading him to the legendary city of Kor in search of an explanation for his mysterious ancestry. He is accompanied by his girlfriend Roxanne. He discovers that he is the only descendant of an Egyptian priest who had been executed for the crime of falling in love with the Egyptian Princess. The ruling queen Ayesha, or rather She, is the same Egyptian Princess of centuries ago, her beauty and youth look being preserved by magic. She becomes convinced that Leo is the reincarnation of her former lover, and wants to kill him. Leo and Roxanne will have to fight against surprise attacks on them, but survival in that foreign land with strange customs, is difficult. Leo is terribly attracted to She’s beauty, but at the same time he fears for her obscure spirit, and finally he must take a decision – to run away from her, or to love her and die. The score is composed by Stelvio Cipriani.

She, I wonder if it’s based on the same story that has been told before in many movies like the 1935 one or the 1965 one. I smell an epic and I have faith that Cipriani can pull this off. The score opens with ‘La Musica Soave’ and wow, that sound. It sounds like old classic Hollywood romantic scoring. Yeah, this I can love. In fact, I’m so happy right now. I can just hope that it continues. ‘La Grande Sfinge’ has a waltz-like sound to it but don’t let that put you off. It’s dramatic and it builds up in a matter which is very entertaining. I almost expect the music to burst out in explosions and flames at any point, but Cipriani demonstrates remarkable restraint. I notice that Cipriani is also using quite a bit of synths in here which is totally strange and put me off guard. Take ‘Vittoriana’ for example, it doesn’t sound anything like the opening cue. Oh no, I fear the worst with ‘L’antica Persia’. Please take me back to that wonderful orchestral experience.

What a strange mix. Why do some cues sound like the polar opposite of each other? It doesn’t make sense. Source cues? I have no idea. It’s like two very different composers competing against each other. I am firmly on the side of whoever did that great opening cue and cues like ‘I Geroglifici’ and specially ‘Il Pozzo Degli Scuri’ and ‘Ustane’s Theme’. I want more of that, much more. Well this took an ugly turn, but there luckily there are cues in here which wakes up old glory, and there are quite a few as well. It’s really strange. Can’t quite figure out what happened and how it all fits in the film. Well it shall remain a mystery to me, but I’m curious to hear your thoughts about this score.
