How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

The Boss Baby is a 2017 American computer-animated comedy film directed by Tom McGrath and starring Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi & Jimmy Kimmel. A new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator — a wildly imaginative 7-year-old named Tim. The most unusual Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin) arrives at Tim’s home in a taxi, wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. The instant sibling rivalry must soon be put aside when Tim discovers that Boss Baby is actually a spy on a secret mission, and only he can help thwart a dastardly plot that involves an epic battle between puppies and babies. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer & Steve Mazzaro.

Isn’t the boss baby a sketch from Saturday Night Live? That and the fact that the boss baby himself is played by Alec Baldwin who is an SNL legend, I’m thinking there’s a connection there. Anyway, on to the music. Zimmer has a long history of scores to animated films starting with The Lion King and more recently the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Mazzaro is less known in the animated world perhaps but is no stranger to Zimmer scores. Someone told me I had to watch the movie and hear the score because both were pretty great. Let’s start with the score and Zimmer/Mazzaro waste no time and goes straight for the excitement with ‘Survival Of The Fittest’, where the opening could have come from a spy action movie. A lot of variations inside this cue as well which I love. It’s fun when it works, and in animation all rules are thrown out and it’s basically a blank canvas to go crazy on.

I do love it when animated scores go crazy. I think I have it from classic Warner Bros and Disney cartoons where music was a big part of the animation itself and Zimmer & Mazzaro seems to have gone the same route which is awesome. It goes from classic slapstick comedy to messing with various pop culture references to absolute epic action and everything in between. I’m old so I like consistency in my scores, but when it’s animation, I tend to throw out the rule book and just enjoy the zany variations on offer. And they do, vary, that is. Mixing all genres as well so you never quite know what you’ll get within a single cue and it’s exciting to find out. So get some unexpected excitement in your life and have some fun with this score.
