How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

The Leftovers is a new HBO series that revolves around mysterious disappearances, world-wide, and specifically follows a group of people who are left behind in the suburban community of Mapleton. They must begin to rebuild their lives after the loss of more than 100 people. The score is composed by Max Richter. The concept of the show intrigued me, but it lost me after only two episodes. I just couldn’t get into it and maybe I’m losing something amazing by not watching any more, but it is what it is. The music was unexpected as I didn’t pay much attention to it. I’m glad it arrived because to me it seems way better than the series.

‘The Leftovers (Main Title Theme)’ start with a powerful bang and then a soft state of percussion before choirs and a delightful little string theme start and it’s truly spectacular. This is the only cue that really goes overboard with power. The rest is a beautiful mix of minimalistic piano and string themes and ambient moods set to exciting synths. ‘Dona Nobis Pacem 1’ and ‘Dona Nobis Pacem 2’ are fantastic build up cues, two of the best of 2014. This score will absolutely make you feel fantastic. I love listening to it, even effect cues like ‘Afterimage 2’. There’s a beauty in the buildup and the way that it sounds.

This might just be the most beautiful sounding score of 2014. The themes, the stunning string and piano sections, the effectful atmospherics, the sensational build ups. This score is so good that I will watch the rest of season 1, how can I not? This is seriously addictive. The review is over, but I keep listening to it and I can’t seem to stop.
