How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

The Mummy Demastered is a 2017 metroidvania type game developed and published by WayForward. A powerful ancient evil has arisen, and the war to save humanity has begun! The Mummy Demastered throws you into a 16-bit-inspired battle against the undead in a 2D, nonlinear, action-packed adventure. As an elite agent in the monster-hunting Prodigium organization, you must use a variety of weapons, upgrades, and mysterious artifacts to defend mankind against the supernatural hordes of Princess Ahmanet. Your Prodigium unit is already on the scene, but HQ lost contact with them hours ago. Only by exploring tombs, forests, abandoned tunnels, and the cursed streets of London will you discover the fate of your allies. But beware – Ahmanet commands legions of undead, insects, plague-ridden vermin, and worse! If you’re not careful, you’ll be the next soul in her army. The score is composed by Monomer.

The Mummy got a reboot of sorts this year starring Tom Cruise, and it was fun, but it wasn’t amazing. The score even less so. So what better way to forget about that mess than to play the video game? I don’t know if it’s an official "The Mummy" game, but it’s here in a way that I didn’t expect. Surely the game has to contain awesome 3D worlds? No? Not at all! Instead it’s quite brilliant as they have made a 2D metroidvania type run-and-gun game and it looks kind of awesome. I haven’t tried it yet, but I feel that I need to. And what about the music? The score is here so let’s check it out. The score opens with ‘Title Theme’ and this is not your father’s (or your grandfather’s) Mummy. Oh no, this is as far away as you can come from Franz Reizenstein, Jerry Goldsmith and Brian Tyler. What it is is a very cool retro synth theme, very beautiful with more than a big throwback to the 80s. So it’s awesome.

This is not your typical 80s time machine though. It feels modern in it’s sound even though it can feel retro as well. It’s definitely not 8-bit even though it’s inspired by it. I haven’t heard of Monomer before, but this is certainly a big way of announcing oneself. It’s simply a synth delight with wonderful themes to boot. And as you might know, I’m a huge fan of synths that sounds retro and this modern/retro mix really appeals to me. Every cue has a unique and interesting motif just like they used to do in the 80s and 90s and they sound terrific as well. Not a fan of Tyler’s Mummy score? Check this one out instead.
