Trance Soundtrack Review: This is a review of the film score Trance by Rick Smith.
Trance is the latest Danny Boyle film and his choice of composers keep changing. This time, Rick Smith is on cue with no more (or less) than 8 tracks on the soundtrack. It’s quite lengthy though and the longest cue is over 7 minutes. The score is a weird mix of funky and slow guitar, ambient strings and dreamy sounds and some dance parts too.
The only cue that almost impress me is the longest cue called ‘Solomon’, It’s sort of a dreamy synth pad cue, not unlike the score to Sunshine by John Murphy and if you remember, Sunshine is also a Danny Boyle film. I am sensing a pattern here. Well I like ‘Solomon’ a lot, but it’s not as good as John Murphy’s score for Sunshine, but it is the best cue on this score.
I think this is one of those scores best appreciated in the movie itself and not necessarily as a standalone listen. Perhaps if you see the movie first, love it and the music in it, then come back to the score you might think differently. As it is, it’s a bit meh.
GEEK SCORE: 62.5
