How are the scores calculated and what does it mean?

We Own The Night is a 2007 thriller starring Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall. The movie is directed by James Gray and is about a New York nightclub manager who tries to save his brother and father from Russian mafia hit men. The score is composed by Wojciech Kilar and this review is part of Polish Film Music Composers month. Do you like repetition and I’m not talking inside one track either. I’ve heard some people describe this as one song repeated over and over. That is a truth with some modifications.

Yes, the opening cue ‘Club Raid’ is one being repeated in a hypnotic pattern, but not for 23 minutes. There are some cues that tries to do something else like ‘Bobby Gets News’. There are 2-3 cues that could do with some variation but the limited time that he has is only 23 minutes. The repeating cue, yet again repeated in ‘Vadim escapes’ is like a droning mess of strings, but I kind of like it.

I admit it’s a strange score. Endless repetitions and very few variations of a theme or two that doesn’t quite excel in the first place. It is interesting though and I enjoy the droning, but in small doses.
